Frequently asked questions

What is The Kiln Studios?

A paint-your-own pottery studio and coffee shop is a creative, welcoming space where people of all ages and skill levels can relax, express themselves artistically, and enjoy good coffee.

You don’t have to be good at art—it’s all about the experience of creating something uniquely yours in a friendly, supportive environment. The Kiln Studios aims to be an inclusive space where everyone feels comfortable, whether you’re popping in for a quiet cup of coffee, painting with friends, or taking part in a fun workshop.

How does it work?

You’ll be greeted by our amazing team and instantly made to feel at home. Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned creative, everyone is welcome here.

Start by choosing from our huge range of pottery pieces—from mugs and plates to fun figurines and plant pots. Then settle in and paint your piece using 34 vibrant underglaze colours. We provide everything you need to bring your vision to life: pencils, stencils, sponges, stickers, brushes, and more—no experience necessary!

Once you’re done, we’ll take care of the rest. We glaze your piece in a food-safe, outdoor-safe clear glaze and fire it in our kiln at nearly 1000°C. About a week later, your beautifully finished piece will be wrapped, packed, and ready to collect. We will notify you via email, but if in doubt give it 10 days and your items will be waiting for you!

We do only use paper bags, that aren’t very sturdy for large pieces, you may want to bring your own bag or we sell tote bags for £3!

How much does it cost?

We don’t have studio fees here at The Kiln Studios so our pricing varies depending on which item(s) you decide to paint!. We offer a variety of options to fit your needs and budget.

Coaster and tiles are £6 to £15, mugs are £16-22, plates are £16-32, bowls are £19-28, characters are £14-22 and more!

Are my pieces ready for collection?

If you painted 10 days ago your pieces will be ready, no need for confirmation just pop into the studio! If in doubt check your junk folder or drop us a message!

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Yes we do! Just pop into either studio to pick up a gift voucher, for any amount, and can be used at either studio!

Are you accessible?

Our Gateshead studio is on the first floor so unfortunately is not accessible. North Shields is on one level with a large bathroom.

Are there ever damages in the firing process?

We take great care with every piece, but things can occasionally go wrong in the kiln. The firing process involves extremely high temperatures, almost 1000°C, which can sometimes cause unexpected changes such as, small cracks or crazing and in very rare cases, breakages or flaws due to hidden air bubbles or thickness. These issues are a normal part of ceramics and can happen even with expert handling. We do everything we can to minimize risks and treat each piece with care and attention.

If something does go wrong, we’ll always do our best to make it right, whether that means a remake opportunity or another thoughtful solution.

How long do you hold items for?

We do have limited space so have to donate items that were painted more than 6 weeks ago. If you know you aren’t going to be able to collect within a month please let us know.

Do we serve food?

We don’t serve food more than a few sweet treats, you’re more than welcome to bring your own but be aware any grease transferred to your pottery will cause issues with the glaze. We also don’t the amenities to heat up food.

Do I Have to book?

Weekday sessions usually have walk-in availability, but Gateshead is usually fully booked for weekends sessions.

I’ve lost my collection card, can i still get my items?

Of course! All we need is a booking name or email, and the date they were created!

Are you dog friendly?

Yes we are, we allow dogs at any of our sessions at North Shields, and at off peak times at our Gateshead Studio!
